Pre-Match Press Conference – Fulham (A) 31/10/2009

Another great week of updates I think you’ll agree….

Long week at work and some RL things that needed sorting this week, added to the general feeling of smug satisfaction after the Utd game meant that the blogging for this week was low down the list of things to get done. Things with the site are moving along slowly but surely and I think over the next 2-3 days you’ll some new content up around here.

So, with that in mind and in an effort to keep my eye in around here I present some lovingly embedded Youtube clips of Rafa’s pre-match press conference ahead of this weekend’s game at Craven Cottage. As is seemingly the way with almost every press conference Rafa does these days, the first matter of course is the state of Steven Gerrard’s groin and the latest injury news.

Pre-Match Press Conference – Man Utd (H) 25/10/2009

Every week I bookmark Rafa’s pre match press conference on the sites Delicious page, yet I never actually seem to post it here and comment on it. Well, that changes today as we have clips from said press conference. The Liverpool Echo usually post the whole thing online but ITN news usually edits it down to the salient points in handy minute sized chunks.

Surprisingly, there were no bits of paper and no statements of fact this time, so instead we were left with a boring Q&A session. Though I will say one thing, Rafa clearly looks far happier during this conference than he did on Tuesday night. And given that this is probably the most important press conference he’s had to do in months, if not years, then it’s even more remarkable.

Here is from earlier in the week….

Calm, measured, relaxed. But no bits of paper and certainly no facts this time.

From Very Left Field

So, there I was getting ready to comment on Glen Johnson’s arrival and Rafa’s pretty fair criticism of Gareth Barry when in the process of clearing the newsfeeds I came across this rather surprising story.

franckribery

ODDS SLASHED ON FRANCK RIBERY JOINING LIVERPOOL

Which left me feeling a little bemused. After all, there can be no way this is even remotely true. The money issues at the club prevent any kind of deal for a player of Ribery’s class going through and apart from anything else, where exactly would be play? Gerrard in the centre, Yossi and Riera or Dirk and Babel on either wing and Fernando up front? No place for him as far as I can see.

The size of the fee (upwards of £60m if Reals efforts are anything to go by) and that loyalty isn’t one of his strong suits (5 clubs in 5 years between 2000 and 2004) suggest that he is probably not what we are after. Add in the Gary Neville lookie-likey factor as a final nail in the coffin for this particularly story.  Besides, if we want a good two footed midfielder who can score from distance, then Wesley Sneidjer is the way forward on that front. Which I think I may have mentioned a couple of times now.

Chamone, Motherfuc….

The one thing that the recent death of Michael Jackson has made us do is remind us of how many people he touc…. No, maybe not.

Michael Jacksons death will probably be remembered as one of the defining moments of the decade. Say what you like about his personal life, and there are many things that you could say about it, the music he created with both Motown and with Quincy Jones, will be remembered long after any us have gone. And as a certain MSNBC reporter noted not long after he passed away, Michael Jackson will only die once.

So, at this point, I’m sure you’re wondering what the hell this has to do with Liverpool Football Club and to be fair, it has nothing to do with Anfield at all. But I was reminded of one of the more surreal episodes in his life thanks to the Guardian.

Just when you least it expect it

michael-owen

The one thing about Michael Owens (possible) transfer to That Manchester Club is not that it took so long but more that one of the other three members of the big four didn’t try to make a move for him before. I’ve mentioned before that I think Owen still has some kind of future at the highest level of English football but even I must admit that I was surprised when the news came through that he was having a medical at THAT club. But is this transfer perhaps about more than Sir Alex reinforcing his front line?

And here is the NEWS!

Excuse the lack of news updates over the last few days, my bad. Pure laziness on the Sunday and the very moreish action of [Prototype] on the Monday. The latter certainly isn’t going to win any prizes for subtlety, or indeed a lot of other things, but it is quite a useful game to have around when you spend all day “interacting with the public”. Not entirely sure why I put that in quotation marks, make me sound like I work as some kind of Man of The Night. Which I can assure you I don’t. Any more.

A news update should sort itself over the next few hours but until then there are a couple of things I wanted to comment about. So, time for Jon Snow mode me thinks…

Delaying The Inevitable

If there is one thing that springs to mind when it comes to Cristiano Ronaldo’s upcoming move to Real Madrid, apart from the headache inducing size of the transfer fee, it’s one of inevitability.

As a Liverpool fan CR9 (as he is to be known in Madrid, which has a nice ring to it for the merchandise) is the devil incarnate for what should be painfully obvious reasons. But he has been, and probably still is, the best player in the world today and I do think the transfer is an incredibly canny bit of business. No-one, not even a club so heavily in debt as United, could turn down a fee that stupid large and still have any credibility left. And with United fans tiring of his endless posturing and preening (there were times last season when he reminded of a Peacock, standing proudly and showing off his plumage) then it didn’t exactly take a genius to figure out that if one large offer came in for him, then he would be on his way.

Same Old Stories

Not a huge amount in the press today, Liverpool related; most, if not all, of it focused on the fact that a title race that should have been over 6 weeks ago is close to finally being put to rest. And of course the fact that a certain Mr C. Ronaldo, completely out of character, threw what can be descibed in footballing terms as a wobbly.

I'm a little teapot, short and stout...

I'm a little teapot, short and stout...

I’ve written before that I’m not a fan of Mr CR and I never will be, not just because he plays for the Manchester team but because of the incredible arrogance of the guy although to be fair one does kind of come with the other on that one. In fact, it says alot that even some Utd fans are starting to tire of his histrionics but this is not really of any concern to me.

Emotionally Drained

So, just another 24 hours in the life of Liverpool Football Club then?

I don’t really have a huge desire to blog today, particularly after last nights efforts and even more so after watching the (unsurprisingly) emotional memorial service on BBC News earlier.

There are some efforts being made behind the scenes to sort things out around here. Not going to make promises but as much as our momentum is building as we head towards the end of the season, my will and desire to blog more seems to be increasing alongside it. Basically, expect a bit more around here soon. I promise.

Just don’t expect me to be doing much today, eh?

May the 96 RIP. You’ll never walk alone.

Month in Review – March ‘09 : March Madness

This is the first of monthly round-ups of news, views and opinions from the site and from the British press. This months is my first attempt at doing something like this, so please go easy on it. Like many things around here at the moment it is a WIP, getting the site ready for a serious, five pronged assault next season. So without further ado….

March started with us having something of a personality complex; Good enough to go to the Bernabau and beat, what would turn out to be a fairly mediocre, Real Madrid but then poor enough to go to the Riverside and lose to what is turning out to be an extremely poor Middlesbrough side. There are a few explanations as to why this happened but the fact that Middlesbrough are clearly our “bogey” team (we haven’t won there since 2001) and that playing a game less than 72 hours after playing in Madrid would probably rank fairly high up the list. That is certainly no excuse; at the time of writing, that win stands as Middlesbrough’s only one in 17 games and they’ve barely scored a goal in anger, or indeed any other type of football, since.
